Computing: Intent, implementation and impact

This document outlines the intent and rationale behind Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work as well as how to implement it and how to measure pupil progress and impact.

Kapow Primary’s Computing scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets outlined in the national curriculum and the aims align with those in the national curriculum. When used alongside Kapow’s RSE & PSHE scheme, our Computing scheme of work also satisfies all the objectives of the DfE’s ‘Education for a Connected World framework’. This guidance was created to help equip children for life in the digital world, including developing their understanding of appropriate online behaviour, copyright issues, being discerning consumers of online information and healthy use of technology.

Our National curriculum mapping document shows which of our units cover each of the national curriculum attainment targets as well as each of these three strands.

Our Subject leader overview: Progression of skills and knowledge document shows the skills that are taught within each year group and how these skills develop year on year to ensure attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage. It also outlines the key knowledge gained in each of our key areas.

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Classical music, dynamics and tempo (Animals)

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Timbre and rhythmic patterns (Fairytales)

A summary of the key concepts, themes, instruments and vocabulary in the Key stage 1 year 1 Music unit about timbre and rhythm based on a fairy tale theme.

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Vocal and body sounds (By the sea)

This resource details the key facts, vocabulary and progression of knowledge covered in the Key Stage 1 Music Year 1 unit: Vocal and body sounds (By the sea). In this unit, children are encouraged to feel pieces of music by moving in ways they think convey its mood. They also make links between music, sounds and environments. These skills are used to help them represent calm or stormy seas using vocal and body sounds as well as percussion instruments

This Knowledge organiser encapsulates the key facts, vocabulary and themes taught in the unit, including how music can represent things such as the weather, the ocean and so on. The document is suitable for printing on A4 and for classroom display and can be used as a recap or refresher for the pupils at the end of a unit and school year. You can find other Knowledge organisers for Kapow Primary Music units here: Year 1 Knowledge organisers.

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Pulse and rhythm

A knowledge organiser is a visual summary of the key facts, vocabulary and themes taught in a Kapow Primary unit. This Knowledge organiser complements the Key Stage 1 Year 1 Music unit: Pulse and rhythm, and can be used as a takeaway for the children after the unit is taught or at the end of a school year to recap the learning over the past 39 weeks. It can also be printed on A3 paper and displayed in a classroom. This introductory topic includes lots of activities for getting to know one another. Through listening to a range of different music and playing games, children learn to identify the difference between the pulse and rhythm of a song and consolidate their understanding of these concepts through listening and performing activities.

This knowledge organiser for the Pulse and rhythm unit explains what pop music is, what untuned instruments are and what they look like, as well as how we can use our bodies as percussion instruments.

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Pitch and tempo (Superheroes)

This Knowledge organiser is part of the Key Stage 1 for Music Year 1 unit: Pitch and tempo (Superheroes). This unit is a great way to introduce young children to pitch and tempo in a meaningful way. Learning how to identify high and low notes and to compose a simple tune, they explore some different instruments, as well as investigate how tempo changes help tell a story and make music more exciting

This Knowledge organiser summarises the main elements learnt in the unit, including concepts, themes, vocabulary and musical instruments. It explains the difference between tuned, untuned and percussion instruments, as well as vocabulary terms including ‘compose’ and ‘accelerando’. This knowledge organiser is suitable for printing on A4 and as posters for classroom display and can be used as a recap or refresher for the pupils at the end of a unit and school year. You can find other Knowledge organisers for Kapow Primary Music units here: Year 1 Knowledge organisers.

Knowledge organiser: Music – Y1 Musical vocabulary (Under the sea)

Knowledge organisers are visual summaries of the key vocabulary and facts for each unit. This resource complements the Key stage 1 Music Year 1 unit: Musical vocabulary (Under the sea). In this unit the children journey into the unknown and explore under the sea through music, movement, chanting and the playing of tuned percussion instrument. The lessons covers key musical concepts at Year 1 level and teaches children to experiment with timbre and dynamics to make their own piece of music about the underwater world.

This Knowledge organiser highlights the key facts, vocabulary and themes taught in the unit, including timbre, dynamics, structure, rhythm and texture. The document is suitable for printing on A4 and as posters for classroom display and can be used as a recap or refresher for the pupils at the end of a unit and school year.
