Find out how Kapow Primary's Music scheme of work aligns with the non-statutory Model music curriculum published in Summer 2021. While the new model curriculum has been somewhat controversial and Ofsted has said it will not expect schools to follow it, many schools will wish to align their teaching of music with this guidance. Kapow Primary's schemes of work always fully cover the requirements of the national curriculum. This downloadable document explains how Kapow Primary aligns with the model curriculum and explains some changes and additions it is making to its scheme of work to cater for schools that wish to follow the new model curriculum.
What is the Model music curriculum?
On 26th March 2021, the Department for Education released the Model music curriculum (MMC). It is important to note that this framework does not replace the current national curriculum. Schools are not required to adopt it. Instead, the MMC offers an approach that schools could follow to deliver the current national curriculum for music.
The Model music curriculum ensures universal provision of music education, accessible to all pupils in all schools. It is a non-statutory guide that offers practical guidelines for teachers to meet the curriculum’s requirements. The MMC aims to provide a shared knowledge base and a core set of competencies for both specialist and non-specialist teachers at primary and secondary levels.
The curriculum covers four key areas: singing, listening, composing and performing/instrumental performance. It provides suggested repertoire and approaches for teachers to deliver the curriculum, and offers suggestions for the ways in which music listening, meaning, performance and composition are interlinked.
The MMC aims to support all pupils in their musical progression through the Key Stages, providing a clear pathway towards mature musical understanding. The curriculum nurtures fundamental musical techniques and builds musical knowledge, with staff notation being an essential component. This provides the opportunity for pupils to learn music independently both in class and after they have left school.

Kapow Primary has designed a comprehensive Music curriculum that aims to provide a progressive programme of study for music from EYFS to Year 6. This curriculum aligns with the statutory national curriculum and the MMC (Model Music Curriculum) and covers all key areas of music education.
The MMC splits the curriculum into four areas:
- Singing
- Listening
- Composing
- Musicianship (KS1) or Performance/Instrumental performance (KS2).
Similarly, Kapow Primary’s music scheme categorises its curriculum into four strands:
- Performing
- Listening
- Composing
- The History of music.
Although the names of the strands may differ, the overall content is the same between the Kapow Primary scheme of work and the MMC. Both draw from the national curriculum and cover essential areas of music education. For instance, Kapow Primary’s scheme includes Singing within Performing, while the MMC covers the History of music within its Listening key area.
