Before starting this unit, you might want to check that the children can recall:

  • Archaeologists and historians investigate artefacts to make deductions about the past.

  • The meaning of the words 'invade', 'conquer' and 'settle'.

  • Before the Romans arrived in Britain, Britons lived in tribes with leaders and there was no central system of government.

  • The Romans left Britain as their troops were needed to defend other parts of their empire.

  • Some of the changes the Romans made remained, but others fell into decline.
