Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Should be organised in groups with other children who are happy to narrate so they can be responsible for animating the puppet; should use the provided silhouettes to support the creation of the shadow puppets; should use easier examples from the Activity: Science in action shadow puppets that may suit some children more than others, (for example, the astronomy or theatre sheets do not have tricky names and use simpler shapes).
Pupils working at greater depth
Should apply a broad range of knowledge about shadows to their puppet show, such as using different materials to create different effects or changing the position of the shadow puppet to change its size; could choose an extension activity relating to light and shadows from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Light and shadows.

Knowledge outcomes
- I can explain that opaque materials are most appropriate to make a shadow puppet as they block light.
- I can use my knowledge of shadows to animate a shadow puppet, such as positioning an object between a light source and a screen to cast the shadow in the correct position.
