Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

Should use the Activity: Testing solids, liquids and gases: support version to record their observations; could use a reduced number of materials when testing the properties (wooden block and putty only); could use the Knowledge organiser to confirm the properties of a solid.

Pupils working at greater depth

Should create a Venn diagram using their PE hoops and sort more challenging mixtures (see Teacher knowledge); should be provided with additional solid materials (e.g. sponge or cotton wool) when testing properties during the Main event to explore solids that appear compressible due to the air trapped in them; could choose an extension activity relating to solids from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: States of matter.
