Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Should use the Activity: Testing solids, liquids and gases: support version from Lesson 1: Solids to record their observations; could use a reduced number of materials when testing the properties (water only); could use the Knowledge organiser to confirm the properties of a gas or a liquid.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should be provided with additional liquid materials (e.g. honey) when testing properties to explore liquids that do not flow easily and take time to take the shape of a container; should watch the link: The Guardian - Water in space and discuss why the water is not ‘taking the shape of the container’ or ‘flowing downwards’ as it would normally (gravity causes both of these properties to occur on Earth); could choose an extension activity relating to gases or liquids from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: States of matter.
