Lesson 1: Wonderful me: Understanding my feelings

How would you feel if you lost a beloved toy? Children follow a well-known story to help them to understand and describe the different emotions they may experience.

Learning objective

  • To describe and understand their feelings
  • To develop simple strategies for managing these feelings

National curriculum

Schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice.

The PSHE Association Programme of Study advises that pupils are taught:

  • H11. about different feelings that humans can experience
  • H12. how to recognise and name different feelings
  • H14. how to recognise what others might be feeling
  • H16. about ways of sharing feelings; a range of words to describe feelings
  • H18. different things they can do to manage big feelings, to help calm themselves down and/or change their mood when they don’t feel good
