AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to technology that enables computers to learn, adapt, and make decisions in a way that mimics human thinking. Although not yet a formal part of the curriculum, there is growing interest in introducing AI education in schools. It’s already a significant aspect of children’s digital experiences, prompting educators to consider its place in the primary Computing curriculum. When should we start teaching about AI? Is it safe for younger pupils, or could avoiding it leave them unprepared for the digital world?

At Kapow Primary, we’ve developed an AI-focused topic for Year 6 as part of our Computing scheme: Computing systems and networks: Exploring AI. This unit introduces pupils to how AI generates text, images, and code. Pupils learn how to create and refine prompts to enhance AI responses, while also reflecting on the ethical considerations surrounding this technology.

How is AI shaping children’s digital lives?

Generative AI is becoming an integral part of children’s and educators’ digital experiences in the UK. According to the National Literacy Trust, the percentage of 13- to 18-year-olds using generative AI rose sharply from 37.1% in 2023 to 77.1% in 2024. Among these, 18.5% used AI to write stories, 12.8% to compose poems or lyrics, and 9.0% for non-fiction writing.

These statistics highlight the rapid integration of AI into education, emphasising the need to teach AI literacy in primary schools. Beyond education, AI shapes children’s habits and perspectives, often influencing their choices within apps, games, and online platforms – sometimes without their awareness.

By helping children understand how AI works, we can empower them to think critically about the content they consume and the decisions they make online. For example, in the lesson What is AI?, pupils watch a video that demonstrates AI’s real-world applications, sparking discussions about how it impacts their daily lives and encouraging thoughtful engagement with technology.

What are the key online safety concerns with AI?

While AI can enhance engagement and creativity, it also raises important online safety concerns, including:

  • Data privacy
  • Fake information
  • Trusting what we see online

With the rise of AI-generated content, children are increasingly exposed to altered images, videos and voices on social media. Viral trends and popular content often include AI-created celebrity photos, fake news stories, or videos that appear authentic but may not be genuine.

How can we empower children to engage safely with AI?

Through guided activities, open discussions and age-appropriate resources, Kapow Primary’s Exploring AI unit gives pupils the skills to interact with AI in safe and purposeful ways, ensuring they develop a balanced and informed approach to this rapidly evolving technology.

It is important to embrace discussions about AI, as it plays an increasing role in the world in which children grow up. Children need to be equipped with the knowledge and understanding to engage with AI safely and responsibly. Introducing AI early ensures they are prepared to navigate and question the technology shaping their experiences, developing both curiosity and caution.

Teachers play a vital role in helping children understand how AI works, equipping them with the skills and confidence to navigate digital tools thoughtfully and responsibly. Through guided activities, open discussions, and age-appropriate resources, Kapow Primary’s Exploring AI unit supports pupils to interact with AI in safe and meaningful ways.

As AI becomes an increasingly influential part of children’s digital lives, it’s essential for primary educators to feel confident addressing both its opportunities and challenges. By developing early discussions and integrating AI education into the Computing curriculum, we can equip children with the skills to think critically, question technology, and engage with AI responsibly.

Kapow Primary’s Exploring AI unit provides teachers with the tools to introduce this complex topic in an age-appropriate and meaningful way, ensuring pupils are prepared to navigate their AI-driven world safely and thoughtfully. Embracing AI education today empowers children to face tomorrow’s digital challenges with curiosity, caution, and confidence.
