What is a deep dive, and what will Ofsted look at?
Ofsted inspections involve an in-depth analysis of specific subjects in a school, which is known as a ‘deep dive‘. These are based on the latest Ofsted framework and help inspectors evaluate the provision of a comprehensive and balanced curriculum, the quality of education provided to children, the progression and sequencing of learning, retention of prior knowledge, and whether the curriculum is meeting its intended objectives.
Art and design is one of the subject areas that Ofsted may choose for a deep dive. The primary goal of a deep dive is to gather evidence that allows inspectors to make a fair assessment of how education is progressing from its intended purpose to its successful implementation and eventual impact on pupils. For this, inspectors scrutinise the flow of lessons and sequences of work, ensuring that there is a clear progression of skills. They also observe lessons and review pupils’ work (in the case of Art and design, this could include scrutiny of practical work). Additionally, inspectors interview the Art and design subject lead to gather further insights.
Examples of some things that you will need to be prepared to show evidence of are:
- Staff preparedness and subject knowledge
- Subject leader oversight of Art and design across the school, including progression, curriculum and content choices
- Provision for SEND, higher ability and lower ability pupils to make progress
- Long-term vision of Art and design for the school
- Website and school documents reflecting provision accurately
