This document shows how schools following our History: Long-term plan —mixed-age are covering the statutory requirements of the national curriculum for History. It also gives guidance about how our History lessons link to other curriculum subjects, to enable schools to plan cross-curricular links effectively.

Is Kapow Primary’s mixed-age History planning in line with the national curriculum’s statutory requirements?
Discover how Kapow Primary can support your mixed-age classroom in meeting the statutory History guidelines set out in the national curriculum. This document clearly outlines the attainment targets for KS1 and KS2 pupils, highlighting the relevant unit for each target. This information is also provided on our individual lesson plans.
For EYFS (Reception) units, the document specifies the activities that cover the Development matters statements and Early learning goals.
Our content is organised into two categories: substantive knowledge strands (topic knowledge; chronological awareness; and substantive concepts) and disciplinary knowledge strands (historical enquiry and disciplinary concepts). This ensures progression in all areas and reflects the idea that “knowledge of the past must be shaped by disciplinary approaches in order to become historical knowledge” (Ofsted Research Review Series: History, 2021). For more information on our curriculum design and progression within each strand, please refer to our History: Long-term plan – mixed age. The mixed-age units follow a Cycle A and Cycle B format to ensure progression of skills for children across the age range. This document shows how the strands, which are present throughout our scheme of work, link to the national curriculum attainment targets.
This document can help you plan accordingly and avoid gaps in your History curriculum coverage if your school changes the units.
