How does this Personal development, SMSC and British values mapping document help my school to meet Ofsted’s inspection criteria?
At Kapow Primary, we understand the value placed on making curriculum links to promote your pupils’ personal and social development. This is also important to inspection bodies, such as Ofsted.
This document explains the meaning of SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) and maps our Music units to Ofsted’s SMSC descriptors. It also shows which of our units support promotion of the fundamental British values: Democracy, Rule of law, Individual liberty, Mutual respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. It details the Personal development criteria used by Ofsted and highlights which of our lessons and units provide opportunities for pupils to develop in each area.
The SMSC statements in this document are taken from Ofsted’s Inspection handbook. This outlines what inspectors should consider when evaluating students’ SMSC development in schools.
(Please note: the curriculum alone will not be sufficient evidence that your school is providing for pupils’ personal development. You will be expected to demonstrate how other elements of school life are geared towards this goal).

This handy guide is intended for Music co-ordinators and Personal development leads. It highlights the areas in the Kapow Primary curriculum where students can enhance their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, as well as gain a better understanding and appreciation for the fundamental British values.
Use it to:
- Support teachers to understand the inclusion of SMSC, British values and Personal development teaching through Music lessons.
- Highlight to teachers, parents, school leaders and outside bodies the ways in which SMSC, BV and PD teaching runs through all areas of the curriculum.
- Develop particular areas of teaching and learning as identified in your School development plan.
