Lesson 2: What does healthy look like?

Children taste test two bolognese sauces to compare their nutritional values. Then after researching variations of the recipe, the children work in teams to decide on ingredients for a healthier alternative.

  • Understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet

 

Design

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups
  • Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design

Evaluate

  • Investigate and analyse a range of existing products
  • Evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work
  • Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world

Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support: Will need to work in supportive teams whereby they are encouraged and equally challenged – set with tasks and asked questions that they can answer and in turn raise their self-esteem.

 

Pupils working at greater depth: Will give more thought to recipe ingredients; for example, the fat percentage of the beef used and also how to make the sauce healthier by adapting the quantities of ingredients considered potentially harmful if consumed in large quantities, ie: salt (including stock) and fats, eg: oils.
