Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support:

Some pupils may need adult help to start wrapping or joining wool; one-to-one modelling of how to pull the wool tight may be useful. Encourage children to find solutions to what they find difficult; for example, if they struggle to knot wool to join it, they should use another method – wrapping over the top of existing wool could be more manageable. Wrapping a rigid shape like a stick is more straightforward than wrapping card shapes. You could provide a range of pre-cut card shapes to wrap. Praise efforts to be independent and remind children they are not aiming for a ‘perfect’ finished product; they are experimenting.

Pupils working at greater depth:

Cutting and wrapping simple card shapes offers challenges, especially in experimenting with the types of shapes that are wrappable. Pupils could explore joining more than one object together when wrapping them. Encourage them to find ways to secure the wool close to the object when adding a new colour.
