Differentiation and assessment
Pupils needing extra support:
May find this task too open-ended and need to use specific pictures, perhaps taken from a magazine, to copy textures and patterns from. Some children may work best in a small group with an adult leading the activity; all children in the group could focus on re-creating a specific texture from their colour walk and talk about the tools and papers they were trying. You could match the tools they use in this lesson to the ones they experienced the most success with in lesson 2.
Pupils working at greater depth:
Should show that they are working with purpose rather than randomly making patterns and mixing colours. Encourage them to describe their thinking as they mix colours or apply paint to make texture; what are they aiming for? How else could they make the same thing? Encourage them to look back at sketchbook work from lesson 2 and think about how they could adapt or improve their ideas.
