Could break the process into smaller, manageable steps (for example, practicing simple movement lines around an abstract shape first); should work on emphasising outlines with guidance before adding gestural lines; could work on just one part of their portrait (for example, the hair or the eyes) rather than the whole face to build confidence; should use the Resource: Hom Nguyen inspiration as a prompt when choosing different types of lines to use; could use a writing slope, pencil grips and thicker pencils or graphite sticks which are easier to control.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should explore different types of lines (for example, crosshatching, angular, flowing) to show different types of movement or emotions; could consider how the movement lines interact across the whole face; could use Hom Nguyen’s style with exaggerated expressions; could explore the effect of different colour schemes.
