Lesson 3: Semibreves

Children learn that a semibreve is worth four beats before being introduced to traditional South African gumboot dancing

Learning objective

  • To recognise and play semibreves by ear and from staff notation

National curriculum

  • Use and understand staff and other notations
  • Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts (using their voices and) playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
  • Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
  • Develop an understanding of the history of music

Differentiation

Pupils needing extra support: Rotate around the class giving support where needed. The lower part (pattern 2) is slightly easier than pattern 1, so you can swap pupils onto this part if they find it easier.

 

Pupils working at greater depth: Give these children the bass line part to play (this is marked ‘Bridge’) – F F C C, G G C C, F F C C, G G G G, which is slightly more complicated as it does not move by step.
