Lesson 1: What places are special to you?

Discussing and identifying the variety of places that are special to the children.

  • Name and describe people who are familiar to them.
  • Recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways.
  • Understand that some places are special to members of their community.

  • Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.

Support and challenge

Adults can use the opportunity to:

  • Provide children with an audio recording device so that children can verbally describe a special place.
  • Provide the Resource: Special places or photographs of special places in the local area the children can use as prompts.
  • Encourage children to explain why their special place is important and how it makes them feel.
  • Ask the children to label their drawing of a special place with a feeling.
