Knowledge

The children have an opportunity to revise the units from the year:

  • Plant reproduction.
  • States of matter.
  • Forces and magnets.
  • Classification and changing habitats.
  • Sound and vibrations.

Working scientifically

Through the context of the enquiry question ‘How does wind force affect seed dispersal?,’ the children investigate how the strength of the wind affects seed dispersal by creating their own seeds and wind speeds. They predict the outcome, design a results table and gather data before plotting them on a bar chart. They analyse model results, learn how to structure a conclusion and then apply these skills to their own results. The enquiry cycle concludes with an evaluation of the trustworthiness of their experiment.

Science in action

The children explore careers related to the unit, including botanists and biologists studying plants for classification and seed conservation. They also look at how seed shapes have contributed to product design as an example of biomimicry.
