Pupils needing extra support

Should be provided with the Activity: Method writing framework to help them structure their method; could be given the equipment (device, bar magnet and materials bag) as a prompt for writing their method.

Pupils working at greater depth 

Should test a range of 1p and 2p coins to find out if all 1p and 2p coins are magnetic and suggest reasons for their findings (some coins contain magnetic metals and some do not; coins made at different dates have a different metal composition depending on the prices of the metals at the time they were made); should answer the question of how a magnetic material is different from a magnet once they have gathered all their data (a magnetic material is not repelled by either pole of a magnet whereas like poles of magnets repel.); could choose an extension activity relating to magnets from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Forces and magnets.
