Lesson 3: Winter wildlife

Discovering how animals adapt to winter weather and learning how to hold and use scissors correctly. Teach this lesson at the end of Spring 1.

  • Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
  • Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

Support and challenge

Adults can use the opportunity to:

  • Assist the children in identifying their dominant hand to ensure they are provided with left-handed scissors if needed during the adult-led task of how to hold scissors.
  • Provide easy-grip squeeze scissors for children not yet ready to use standard scissors, ensuring they can comfortably and safely participate in the adult-led task.
  • Provide modelling dough rolled into sausage shapes and have the pupils cut off small pieces for extra scissor practice.
  • Challenge the children to use tools to add more detail to their modelling dough hedgehogs, such as sculpting realistic features like paws or adding patterns to the ears.
