Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Could use the Resource: Knowledge organiser: Science – Rocks and soil to check the composition of different soil types for the Recap and recall activity and to support them in drawing and labelling their sedimentation jar diagram and in identifying the category of soil.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should be provided with an additional sedimentation jar or jars containing other categories of soil to identify the different soils and compare the similarities and differences between them; could choose an extension activity relating to soil from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Rocks and soil.

Knowledge outcomes
Knowledge

- I can identify the layers in a sedimentation jar, including sand, silt, clay and organic matter.
- I can describe the size of the particles in a sedimentation jar from smallest to largest: clay, silt, sand and stones.
