Pupils needing extra support

Could be provided with the Resource: Animal sorting word bank (support) to help identify characteristics when sorting vertebrates and invertebrates into groups (stick them into their books for use in other lessons, including Lesson 3: Classification keys); could use the Knowledge organiser to help them identify vertebrates and invertebrates. 

Pupils working at greater depth

Should create their own examples of Carroll and Venn diagrams using categories they have chosen; should debate whether humans should be classified differently from other animals and why (humans should not be classified differently from other animals as they are mammals with hair and are similar to apes or humans should be classified differently from other animals as they can invent things like tools, medicines and technology); could choose an extension activity relating to classification from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Classification and changing habitats.
