Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Could investigate melting using real ice cubes (easier to observe melting) and only hot and cold water, allowing for less data collection; could use the Knowledge organiser to help support writing a conclusion and answering the video questions.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should be provided with a list of materials (a hot water bottle, thermometer, foil cake cases, butter, chocolate, ice and an iron nail) to discuss and plan (on a whiteboard) how to compare the melting points of the different materials; could choose an extension activity relating to melting and freezing from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: States of matter.

Knowledge outcomes
- I can describe the conditions needed for melting (heating above the melting point of the material) and freezing (cooling below the freezing point of the material).
- I can describe the property changes as a material melts from having a fixed shape to flowing and taking the shape of its container.
- I can describe the property changes as a material freezes, from flowing and taking the shape of its container to having a fixed shape.
- I can name the start and end states when materials melt (solid to liquid).
- I can name the start and end states when materials freeze (liquid to solid).
