Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Could use the bird hunt pictures stuck around the classroom to help them identify the characteristics of the different birds; could use the Resource: Animal sorting word bank from Lesson 1: Vertebrates and invertebrates, as question prompts for their classification key; could watch the Pupil video: Classification keys from Lesson 2: Grouping living things: Plants, to remind them of the steps needed to create a classification key.
Pupils working at greater depth
Could be encouraged to photograph birds they spot in the outside space and identify them using the RSPB bird identification tool; could choose ten invertebrates for their classification key, requiring a more complex key to be created with additional questions.
