Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Should measure their shadows in centimetres and round to the closest whole number; could watch the Pupil video: Investigating shadows played on a loop to support when completing the method and collecting results; should use the Activity: Investigating shadows: support version to provide more of a writing frame when completing the conclusion.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should measure their shadows in millimetres; could choose a specific distance to position the torch from the object to make it a fair test rather than comparative, such as 5 cm for ‘close’, 15 cm for ‘medium’ and 25 cm for ‘far’ and adjusting the results table accordingly; should apply experience and scientific vocabulary to suggest causes of odd data and justify predictions of missing values; could choose an extension activity relating to light and shadows from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Light and shadows.

Knowledge outcomes
- I can name factors that change the size of a shadow, such as the distance or angle of the light source.
- I can describe how the closer a light source is, the larger the size of the shadow.
