Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • To determine the conductivity of different materials and link this to their uses.

Working scientifically

  • To write a detailed, organised method that is easy to follow.

Lesson plan

Recap and recall

Watch the Pupil video: Investigating electrical conductors and insulators. Pause the video at 0.40 and engage the class in a discussion about each test material (they do not need to record their predictions in a results table).

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

Should use the Resource: Method word bank (support) to help them write their method, which provides three keywords for each step of the method; could use the activity Activity: Designing a spacesuit (support) during the Wrapping up.

Pupils working at greater depth

Should create an additional cup wrapped in multiple layers of different materials; could be challenged to select materials that, when combined, would offer the maximum possible insulation against heat loss; should analyse how the combination of materials affected the heat retention compared to the individual materials; should refine their designs based on the data and their observations; could choose an extension activity relating to conductivity from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Properties and changes.

Knowledge outcomes

  • I can define the term electrical conductivity as a measure of how quickly and easily electrical charge passes through a material.
