Lesson plan
Recap and recall
Arrange the class into pairs and ask them to share their mnemonics (from Lesson 2: Our Solar System) to help them remember the order of the planets. Select some volunteers to share their mnemonics with the class. After each mnemonic, ask the class to repeat the order of the planets.

Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Could use the Activity: Moons data table (support) to support them in designing a data table for their research. Could use the phases of the Moon diagram in the Knowledge organiser to support them throughout the lesson, in particular it could be reviewed before watching the Pupil video: The Moon and used to help check their answers were correct.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should use a torch and a ball to explain the phases of the Moon by recreating each stage of the cycle on the Activity: Phases of the Moon; should add an extra column to their data table to record the names of the known moons (with a maximum of five names for any one planet); could choose an extension activity relating to the Moon from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Earth and space.
