Adaptive teaching
Pupils needing extra support
Could be given a whiteboard to plan their results table before drawing it; should use the Activity: Recording information about batteries to support designing and drawing the results table; could use the circuit simulation online tool before the lesson to familiarise how to select and manipulate components.
Pupils working at greater depth
Should design an experiment to test how a change in voltage affects the brightness of a bulb; should consider the changed, measured and controlled variables, including ways to keep the control variables consistent (this can be saved to use the following lesson); could choose an extension activity relating to batteries from the Resource: Stretch and challenge: Circuits, batteries and switches.

Knowledge outcomes
- I can identify that batteries are a voltage source.
- I can recall that batteries have different voltages but are often 1.5 V in everyday appliances or multiples of 1.5 V.
- I can describe that the higher the voltage, the brighter the bulbs.
