Lesson plan

Recap and recall

Hand out the Activity: Vertebrate characteristics table and ask the children to tick the characteristics of fish, amphibians and reptiles. Point out that the children only need to complete the top three rows of the table. Reveal the answers by displaying the Presentation: Comparing cold-blooded vertebrates, allowing the children to mark their answers.

Adaptive teaching

Pupils needing extra support

Could use the Activity: Mammals storyboard: support version.

Pupils working at greater depth

Should be encouraged to compare birds to other vertebrates in their scripts; could use the Activity: Mammals storyboard: extension version; should use facts from the ‘Extra information’ section in the Resource: Warm-blooded vertebrates research cards when completing their storyboard.
