Guidance for adapting the unit: Art & design Year 1: Collage using different media, to the theme of castles. The unit can be adapted to any object or landscape, as long as there can be a focus on texture.

BeachCollage1

Materials

  • A printed image of a castle (per pupil)
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Pencils
  • Scrap papers and materials to create textures.

BeachCollage2

1.Select an appropriate material to represent the texture of the object or scene that you have chosen. We have chosen thick, rough card to represent the castle texture.

2. Copy or trace elements of the image onto the card (or whatever appropriate material you have chosen). Thick black pen has been used for the benefit of the demonstration, but pupils can use pencil. We have drawn the castle turrets.

3. Cut the castle shapes out and stick them to the photocopied image of the castle.

4. Then use the materials to add texture to represent the other aspects of the image. We have used:

  • ripped newspaper for the trees’ texture
  • blue and white coloured paper for the sky
  • blue film for the water.

5. Experiment with moving the different materials around, behind and in front of one another. When everything is positioned correctly, glue the pieces down.

6. Use black pen to draw in some of the castle details. We have used tracing paper over the water to create a reflection of the castle. You could glue sand or grit over the top to create more textures.
