Progression of Dough Cutting Skills in Primary Cooking

This Design and technology  video helps teachers support pupils in developing dough-cutting skills, improving fine motor control, creativity, and awareness of waste reduction. It shows how children gain confidence using dough cutters and knives while learning to cut efficiently and precisely.

The video demonstrates how younger children start with simple dough cutters on a floured surface, pressing firmly to cut safely. In Key Stage 1, they experiment with different cutter shapes before moving on to a table knife for more precise portioning. By Key Stage 2, pupils refine their technique by positioning cutters carefully to reduce waste, rerolling dough when needed, and exploring different shapes and designs.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Cooking and Nutrition resources. It ensures that teachers feel confident and prepared to support pupils in developing safe and effective dough-cutting skills in the units below.
