Improving wheels - part 1
This teacher video accompanies the first of two lessons, where children will focus on refining their cutting skills to improve the wheels on their pull-along toy models. The video supports teachers to ensure their pupils:
- Progress from cutting straight lines to curved shapes for circular wheels.
- Use techniques like “sharp bites” to remove excess material and “fishy nibbles” to round edges.
- Observe the effects of off-center wheel placement and work on estimating the center.
- Replace their original wheels with improved versions, testing how well they turn.
- Identify why wobbly wheels occur and explore solutions, including securing axles for smoother movement.
By the end of the lesson, pupils will have built more stable, functional wheels, preparing them for the next session, where they will make them even thicker and smoother.
This engaging hands-on lesson helps develop fine motor skills, problem-solving, and early engineering thinking in a fun and interactive way
