Progression of Grating Skills in Primary Cooking
This Design and technology video explains how pupils develop grating skills and the equipment they will use throughout primary school. It explores how pupils develop safe and effective grating techniques, from handling soft foods in Key Stage 1 to zesting citrus fruits and grating spices in later years.
The video demonstrates skill development across key stages. Younger pupils start with soft foods like cheese and cucumber, learning to use a box grater with a non-slip base. In lower Key Stage 2, they progress to firmer foods such as carrots and apples, applying more pressure while maintaining control. By upper Key Stage 2, pupils learn zesting techniques for citrus fruits and explore grating spices like nutmeg, using smaller graters with care.
