Progression of Peeling Skills in Primary Cooking
This Design and technology video shows how pupils develop peeling skills and the equipment they should use throughout primary school. It explores how children build control and confidence, starting with peeling soft fruits by hand in early years and progressing to using a peeler to create ribbons in later stages.
The video demonstrates how Reception-age children begin by peeling fruits like bananas and satsumas using their hands. In Key Stage 1, they use a swivel peeler on foods like cucumbers and carrots, practising safe handling techniques. By Key Stage 2, they become more independent, peeling apples and potatoes more precisely. Upper Key Stage 2 pupils refine their skills by using a peeler to create vegetable ribbons for salads and other dishes, adding texture and variety to their cooking.
