Step 1

Begin by recapping what the children already know about online safety. Ask them to write keywords on a whiteboard or paper, either by themselves or as a class, by verbally sharing everything they know about online safety.

Keep these mind maps accessible throughout the lesson to assist the children with ideas for their raps.

Step 2

Ask the children what a rap is and what it might include. Watch the Year 1 Online safety rap video, and get them involved by singing and rapping along. We recommend watching it a few times to become familiar with the lyrics. If the children encounter any new learning in the lyrics, ask them to add it to their mind maps.

Step 3

Explain to the children that they have the exciting opportunity to create their very own class rap focused on online safety. They will also get to perform their rap while rapping along to the backing track of the video. To make this creative process easier, use the supporting resources provided above.

Step 4

It’s now time to get started with your raps! Share the Presentation: Online safety rap activity with the class.

This presentation provides guidance on how to collectively create a class rap by taking ideas and suggestions from the children.

After writing the rap, use a ‘my turn, your turn’ technique for rehearsal, where the teacher says a line, and the class echoes it as a group. Encourage volunteers to lead different parts of the rap, with the class repeating after them.

While rapping along to the backing track is optional at this stage, it may be easier for the class to rehearse without music. You can use a metronome or clapping to keep them in time.

For those who are interested or confident, there’s an option to write their own raps independently or in small groups. Hand out the Activity: Rhyming pairs and direct them to the class mind map for further support.

Step 5

Once your rap is ready, encourage those who feel confident to perform and celebrate with a whole-class performance! If you’re feeling ambitious, consider showcasing your performance in various ways, such as in school assemblies, for other classes, or even recording and sharing it online. The possibilities for sharing your creativity and promoting online safety are endless!
