Step 1

Begin by recapping what the children already know about online safety. Ask them to create a mind map on a whiteboard or paper, either by themselves or as a class, by verbally sharing everything that they know about online safety.

Keep these mind maps accessible throughout the lesson to assist the children with ideas for their raps.

Step 2

It’s now time to have some fun! Watch the Year 4 Online safety rap video and get your pupils involved by singing and rapping along. We recommend watching it a few times to become familiar with the lyrics. If the children encounter any new learning in the lyrics, ask them to add it to their mind maps.

Step 3

Explain to the children that they will have the exciting opportunity to create their very own raps focused on online safety. They will also get to perform their raps while rapping along to the backing track of the video. To make this creative process easier, use the supporting resources provided above.

Step 4

It’s not time to get started with your own raps! Share the Presentation: Online safety rap activity with the class. This presentation provides valuable guidance on how to write a rap and allows the children the time they need to work their creative magic!

For added inspiration, consider playing the backing track in the background. This will help them experiment with ideas and rhymes while working on their raps. If necessary, you can use the slower version of the backing track to make practising easier.

Let them create their raps individually, in pairs or in small groups. The key here is to have fun with words, sentences and rhymes while ensuring that key online safety knowledge and messaging are incorporated.

Step 5

Once they’re ready, encourage those who feel confident to perform their raps in class and celebrate with your very own class concert! If you’re feeling ambitious, consider showcasing their performances in various ways, such as in school assemblies, for other classes, or even recording and sharing them online. The possibilities for sharing their creativity and promoting online safety are endless!

We’d love to see their talent, so please share any video clips with us at [email protected] or on Twitter (X).
